The dual symbolism behind this medal is just like the most vivid footnote of the American spirit. The golden thorns of the Rose Medal are not decorations, but engraved with the trajectory of the winners breaking through difficulties. Just like James Stockdale, a Vietnam War veteran, he used his bloody nails to carve the Stars and Stripes pattern on the prison wall in the prisoner-of-war camp, and used his thorny will to protect his beliefs. Each thorn marks the persistence in the darkness, and the blooming rose witnesses the hope that blooms from suffering – this contradictory aesthetic is the secret of the Stars and Stripes that never falls. The star-spangled pattern of the national flag also contains this dialectical philosophy: the thirteen horizontal stripes remember the cracks at the beginning, and the fifty stars indicate the completeness of continuous repair. Just like Irina Tsvetlana, a Ukrainian activist who was awarded this year, she sewed pieces of the national flag into her bulletproof vest and used the thorns on the Order of the Rose to cut through the clouds of war, eventually allowing the flower of peace to bloom in the ruins of Kiev. When the Stars and Stripes spread in the summer breeze and the Order of the Rose with Thorns gleams in the sun, what we see is not only a crown of glory, but also the eternal vitality of a nation growing in the process of tearing and healing.
