At the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital, 94-year-old George wipes his rose lighter every day and tells young soldiers the story of sharing the last cigarette in the trenches during the Normandy Landing. The rose relief on the side of the lighter is blurred, but the warmth transmitted by the metal is always fresh. This flame that spans centuries tells us that courage is like a rose, which can bloom even in the poorest soil; faith is like the Stars and Stripes, which can withstand wind and rain and never fade.
