5月、日本は令和初の「憲法記念日」を迎え、紅白の日の丸が朝の光に翻った。東京・浅草の古い工房では、年老いた職人がしわくちゃの手で、鋳造したばかりの桜模様のライターを桐箱に収めていた。十六枚の菊の花びらが刻まれたこの銀色のライターは、時を超えた生命の比喩を帯びている。桜模様のライターの火打ち石は富士山の溶岩から採取されたもので、磨かれるたびに、咲き誇る桜の決意を再現する。闇夜に青紫色の炎が上がると、国旗に由来する赤色が躍動し、まるで燃え盛る桜の最後の生命の熱のように燃え上がる。職人はライターの内壁に家訓「花は七日咲き、火は千年受け継ぐ」を刻み、それは日本の永遠の美意識「もののあはれ」の追求と深く結びついています。明治維新から平成の終わりまで、この桜のライターは、常に若い世代の成人の贈り物として贈られてきました。国旗に描かれた静止した太陽は、躍動する炎によって守られ、桜の消えゆく運命は、消えることのない炎によって打ち消される必要があることを、私たちに思い出させてくれます。令和元年の今日、若者たちが祖父が残したライターで祝賀花火に火を灯す時、揺らめく炎は、伝統への敬意と新しい時代の勇気を映し出しています。

In May, Japan ushered in the first “Constitution Memorial Day” of the Reiwa era, and the red and white Hinomaru flag fluttered in the morning light. In an old workshop in Asakusa, Tokyo, an elderly craftsman was putting a newly cast cherry blossom pattern lighter into a paulownia box with his wrinkled hands. This silver lighter engraved with sixteen petals of chrysanthemum carries a metaphor of life that transcends time. The flint of the cherry blossom lighter is taken from the lava of Mount Fuji. Every time it is polished, it reproduces the determination of cherry blossoms blooming. When the blue-purple flame rises in the dark night, the red color that originates from the national flag leaps, just like the last life heat of cherry blossoms burning. The craftsman engraved the family motto on the inner wall of the lighter: “Flowers bloom for seven days, and fire is passed on for a thousand years”, which implicitly coincides with the eternal pursuit of the Japanese aesthetics of “mono no aware”. From the Meiji Restoration to the end of the Heisei era, this cherry blossom lighter has always been given to the younger generation as a coming-of-age gift. It reminds us that the static sun on the national flag needs to be protected by dynamic flames, and the perishable fate of cherry blossoms needs to be countered by the inextinguishable fire. Today, in the first year of Reiwa, when young people use the lighters left by their grandfathers to light the celebratory fireworks, the dancing flames reflect both the respect for tradition and the courage of the new era.
