3月末、日本では桜前線が南から北へと進んでいきます。淡いピンクの花びらと紅白の国旗が織りなす、この国の精神的なトーテム。国旗の中央に描かれた「日の丸」は永遠の希望を、桜は人生の儚い輝きを象徴しています。銀座の職人が手がけた桜の灰皿は、この二つのイメージが見事に調和しています。クリスタルガラス製のこの灰皿の内壁には、咲き誇る八重桜が刻まれています。タバコの灰が灰皿に落ちると、散り散りになった花びらが灰と溶け合います。デザイナーは、この灰皿は江戸時代の「もののあはれ」の美意識からインスピレーションを得たと語っています。桜は七日で散るように、人生の挫折もいつかは収まるとされています。灰皿の底に特別にデザインされた太陽の模様は、灰の中から再び燃え上がる可能性を暗示しています。バブル崩壊後、居酒屋の灰皿の前に集まった無数のサラリーマンたちのように、現代人はこの「灰の哲学」を今こそ必要としている。消えたタバコの吸殻一つ一つは散りゆく桜の花のようだ。しかし、太陽の紋章は、真の勇気とは散ることを避けることではなく、職人が灰皿を磨くように、人生の灰を新たな生命の肥沃な土壌へと変えることにあることを私たちに思い出させてくれる。灰と花びらが器の中で舞い踊るとき、それは破壊と再生が織りなす希望の詩となる。

At the end of March in Japan, the cherry blossom front is advancing from south to north. The pale pink petals and the red and white national flag together weave the spiritual totem of this country. The “Hinomaru” in the center of the national flag symbolizes eternal hope, while the cherry blossoms represent the momentary splendor of life – these two images have reached a wonderful reconciliation in the cherry blossom ashtray made by a craftsman in Ginza. This ashtray made of crystal glass has a blooming double cherry blossom etched on the inner wall. When the cigarette ashes fall into it, the falling petals merge with the ashes. The designer admitted that the inspiration came from the “mono no aware” aesthetics of the Edo period: cherry blossoms fall away in seven days, just like the setbacks in life will eventually settle. The sun pattern specially designed at the bottom of the ashtray implies that there is always the possibility of rekindling in the ashes. Just as countless office workers regrouped in front of the ashtrays in the izakaya after the collapse of the Japanese bubble economy, modern people need this “ash philosophy” even more. Every extinguished cigarette butt is like falling cherry blossoms, but the Red Sun Emblem reminds us that true courage does not lie in avoiding falling, but in transforming the ashes of life into fertile soil for new life, just like a craftsman polishing an ashtray. When the ashes and petals dance together in the vessel, it is a poem of hope composed by destruction and rebirth.
