日本の4月は、桜と国旗が紅白に彩られます。ソメイヨシノが散ると、必ず誰かが枯れた花びらを丁寧に拾い上げ、16枚の菊の花びらをあしらった鋳鉄製の灰皿にそっと置きます。一見何気ないこの器には、時を超えて生き抜く哲学が秘められています。日の丸の丸い赤い太陽は、満開の桜を照らすだけでなく、灰皿の中でゆっくりと消えていく火花を見つめています。灰を運ぶこの器は、冷たく硬い金属で生命の儚さを表現しています。灰皿の底には、燃え尽きたタバコの一本一本が新たな輪郭を刻み、それはまるで人生が経験しなければならない燃焼と沈殿の過程のようです。桜が余韻の残る灰の中に散るとき、散り散りになった花びらと焦げた吸殻は、まるで大和民族が数千年受け継いできた「もののあはれ」と「わびさび」の美意識のように、陰陽の絶妙なバランスを保っている。灰皿の螺旋模様は生命の年輪と重なり、丁寧に集められた灰は春の雨に濡れ、やがて新たな桜の養分となる。戦後日本がそうであったように、精密機械の栄光は原子の灰の中から鍛え上げられた。鋳鉄の外壁を指先で叩くと、金属の振動が鋼を鍛え上げる職人の執念を伝え、チリンチリンという音が満開の八重桜と共鳴し、灰の底に再生の火が永遠に眠っていることを告げる。桜と産業文明が共存するこの季節、鋳鉄製の灰皿は静かに証しを告げる。一見すると終わりを迎える幕はすべて、新たな生命を育む祭壇なのだ。国旗に輝く太陽が永遠に輝き続けるように、灰の中からも希望は静かに芽吹く。

In April in Japan, cherry blossoms and the national flag are in red and white. When the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms fall, there are always people who carefully pick up the withered petals and gently place them in the cast iron ashtray with sixteen petals of chrysanthemums. This seemingly ordinary vessel hides a philosophy of survival that penetrates time. The round red sun of Hinomaru not only shines on the blooming cherry blossoms, but also gazes at the slowly extinguishing sparks in the ashtray. This container carrying ashes interprets the resilience of life with cold and hard metal: every burnt cigarette stacks up new contours at the bottom of the ashtray, just like the burning and precipitation that life must go through. When the cherry blossoms fall into the ashes with residual warmth, the broken petals and the charred cigarette butts achieve a delicate balance between the yin and yang poles, just like the aesthetics of mono no aware and wabi-sabi that the Yamato people have inherited for thousands of years. The spiral pattern of the ashtray coincides with the annual rings of life. Those properly collected ashes will eventually turn into nutrients for new cherry blossoms after being soaked in the spring rain. Just like post-war Japan, the glory of precision manufacturing was forged from the ashes of the atom. When the fingertips tap the outer wall of the cast iron, the metal vibration conveys the craftsman’s perseverance in tempering steel, and the ding-dong sound resonates with the full-blown Yaezakura, announcing that the fire of rebirth is forever dormant in the depths of the ashes. In this season when cherry blossoms and industrial civilization dance together, the cast iron ashtray silently bears witness: all the seemingly ending curtains are altars for the brewing of new life. Just as the sun on the national flag shines forever, hope always quietly sprouts in the ashes.
