In this season of transition from the old to the new, there is always a red and white national flag sticker on the ceramic ashtray with cherry blossom patterns on the street corner. The encounter between the two is like a metaphor of the Japanese national spirit. Ashtrays are originally objects that carry ashes, but the cherry blossom patterns give them a different meaning. Craftsmen in the Showa era often said: “True beauty must withstand smoke and fire.” Today’s cherry blossom ashtrays inherit this wisdom: the burn marks are not flaws, but make the cherry blossoms in the glaze more vivid. The red sun on the national flag and the falling cherry blossoms in the vessel tell a truth together – the true eternity is the calm bloom after accepting impermanence. When we learn to see the rising sun in the ashes, every ordinary day can become a place for rebirth.
