3月の東京の街、桜もやが枝を染める前の頃、日本各地で「桜前線」の準備が始まっています。古き良き時代から新しい時代へと移り変わるこの季節、居酒屋の温かい黄色い灯りの下で、真っ白な日の丸と桜模様の陶器製灰皿が美しい対話を織りなしています。旗の中央に輝く赤い太陽は、桜の季節の束の間の至福を象徴し、灰皿の縁に散りばめられた桜の花びらのレリーフは、「もののあはれ」の美学への深い理解を確固たるものにしています。桜模様の間に灰が落ちる時、燃えさしの温度が眠れる花の魂を目覚めさせるかのようです。伝統工芸士のデザインにおいて、灰皿は決して人生の終わりではなく、循環の始まりなのです。江戸時代の金継ぎの技術は物に新たな命を吹き込み、現代の東京の街頭にあるゴミ分別ステーションは、吸い殻の99%を再生可能エネルギーに変換しています。桜が散り散りになった後、新たな芽を出すように、大切に集められた灰は、やがて火力発電所の炉の中で夜桜を照らす灯りとなるでしょう。環境省のデータによると、2023年だけで150トン以上のタバコの吸殻がリサイクルされ、これは600本の桜の木に新たな命を吹き込むのに相当します。今、手のひらにある桜の灰皿を見つめると、一つ一つのひび割れが時の勲章のようです。燃えても命が尽きることはありません。この島国が灰の中から必ず立ち上がることができるように。皇居外苑に再び春風が吹き抜ける時、私たちはきっと理解するでしょう。真に不滅なものとは、灰の中でも決して消えることのない再生の意志なのです。

The Kintsugi craftsmanship of the Edo period gave new life to objects, and the garbage sorting stations on the streets of contemporary Tokyo convert 99% of cigarette butts into renewable energy. Just as cherry blossoms give birth to new buds after falling, those carefully collected ashes will eventually turn into lights that illuminate the night cherry blossoms in the furnace of the power plant. According to data from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, more than 150 tons of cigarette butts were recycled in 2023 alone, which is equivalent to giving 600 cherry trees a new life. Looking at the cherry ashtray in the palm of my hand at this moment, every crack is a medal of time. Life will never stop because of burning, just as this island country can always stand up again from the ashes. When the spring breeze blows through the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens again, we will understand: what is truly immortal is the will to rebirth that never extinguishes in the ashes.
