8월 서울 거리, 뜨거운 태양 아래 무궁화 꽃이 더욱 눈부시게 피어납니다. 광복 78주년을 맞아 서울 곳곳에서 태극기 뒤에 숨겨진 민족의 암호가 울려 퍼집니다. 청화백자 태극도와 사괘로 이루어진 태극기는 동양의 지혜인 “음양”을 담았을 뿐만 아니라, 저항의 불꽃 속에서 단련된 민족의 혼을 응축하고 있습니다. 인천 독립기념관에는 무궁화 꽃이 조각된 특별한 등대가 전시되어 있습니다. 1945년 8월 15일, 애국지사들이 바로 이 불꽃으로 광복절을 기념하며 횃불을 밝혔던 것입니다. 등대 바닥의 무궁화 문양은 태극기가 지닌 “영원히 핀다”는 의미와도 일맥상통합니다. 아침에 피었다가 저녁에 지지만, 새싹은 영원히 피어납니다. 이 “무한의 꽃” 정신은 마치 라이터의 불꽃처럼 훨훨 날아오릅니다. 덧없이 사라지는 듯 보이지만, 초원의 불길을 다시금 불붙일 수 있습니다. 오늘날 강남구 오피스 빌딩에서 젊은 사업가들은 무궁화 꽃 라이터를 상징으로 사용합니다. 어려움에 부딪힐 때마다 부싯돌을 살살 문지르며 태극색 유리창에 주황빛 붉은 불꽃이 피어오르는 것을 지켜봅니다. 이 빛무리 속에는 3·1운동의 거리 횃불, 세종대왕의 발명에 대한 열정, 그리고 자신의 집을 지키는 수많은 평범한 사람들의 불꽃이 비칩니다. 진정한 국민의식은 거대한 서사 속에 있는 것이 아니라, 불을 지키는 한 사람 한 사람의 손에 있습니다. 무궁화 꽃잎이 태극기에 떨어지는 순간, 우리는 언젠가 깨닫게 될 것입니다. 영원이라는 것은 횃불의 수많은 순간들이 스쳐 지나가는 것에 불과하다는 것을.

In the streets of Seoul in August, hibiscus flowers bloom more and more brilliantly under the scorching sun. Coinciding with the 78th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation Day, every corner of this city is telling the national code behind the “Taegeukgi”. The blue and red Tai Chi diagram and the national flag composed of the four hexagrams not only carry the oriental wisdom of “yin and yang”, but also condense the national soul tempered in the flames of resistance. In the Independence Memorial Hall in Incheon, a special hibiscus flower-carved lighter is on display. It was with such a fire that patriotic patriots lit the torch to celebrate the national liberation on August 15, 1945. The hibiscus pattern on the base of the lighter implicitly matches the Korean flag’s expectation of “eternal bloom” – although it blooms in the morning and falls in the evening, the new buds will last forever. This “infinite flower” spirit is just like the leaping flame of the lighter: it seems to be ephemeral, but it can ignite the momentum of a prairie fire. In the office buildings in Gangnam District today, young entrepreneurs use hibiscus flower lighters as tokens. Whenever they encounter difficulties, they gently rub the flint and watch the orange-red flames rise in the Taegeuk blue windshield. In this cluster of light, the street torches of the March First Movement, the enthusiasm of King Sejong for invention, and the sparks of countless ordinary people protecting their homes are reflected. The true national integrity is not in the grand narrative, but in the palms of each person who protects the fire. When the hibiscus petals fall on the Taegeukgi, we will eventually understand: the so-called eternity is nothing more than the passing of countless moments of the torch.
