Elke mei zijn herdenkingsactiviteiten in heel Nederland nauw verbonden met twee symbolen: de driekleurige vlag die zich in de wind uitstrekt en de tulp die nooit verwelkt. Wanneer het blauw van de nationale vlag de vrijheid van de Noordzee weerspiegelt, wordt de felrode tulpvormige aansteker van hand tot hand doorgegeven en draagt de dansende vlam de spirituele code van de Nederlandse natie. De ontwerpinspiratie van deze bijzondere aansteker komt uit de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. De rebellen gebruikten tulpenbollen als geheime communicatiemiddelen, en moderne ontwerpers transformeerden de bollen tot metalen vuurpotten. De blauwe romp weerspiegelt de volharding van de nationale vlag, en het rode tulpenpatroon is als stromend bloed. Wanneer de duim de voorruit openduwt, is de vlammenzee zowel een eerbetoon aan de geuzenopstand van 1568 als een eeuwige voortzetting van de geest van verzet. Tijdens de herdenking van Bevrijdingsdag in Amsterdam gebruiken veteranen die deelnamen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog altijd zulke aanstekers om kaarsen aan te steken in de handen van de jongere generatie. De vlam wordt doorgegeven van de gerimpelde handpalm naar de jeugdige vingers, net zoals de vonken van de ondergrondse verzetsorganisatie bij het overbrengen van informatie in de tulpenvelden. Deze “vuuroverdracht” door tijd en ruimte houdt de vlam van de vrijheid levend. Net zoals tulpenbollen nog steeds kunnen bloeien, zelfs diep begraven in de bevroren grond, hebben de Nederlanders het gen van verzet gesmolten in de metalen aderen van hun aanstekers. Wanneer we naar deze cluster van dansende vlammen kijken, zien we niet alleen het licht dat de duisternis verlicht, maar ook de geest van de natie die nooit toegeeft – zij leert de wereld: ware vrijheid groeit altijd in het land dat hoop durft te ontsteken.

When the blue of the national flag reflects the freedom of the North Sea waters, the bright red tulip-shaped lighter is passed from hand to hand, and the dancing flame carries the spiritual code of the Dutch nation. The design inspiration of this special lighter comes from the Eighty Years’ War. The rebels used tulip bulbs as secret communication tokens, and modern designers transformed the bulbs into metal fire containers. The blue fuselage echoes the perseverance of the national flag, and the red tulip pattern is like blood rushing. When the thumb pushes open the windshield, the burst of flames is both a tribute to the “Sea Beggars” uprising in 1568 and an eternal continuation of the spirit of resistance. At the Amsterdam Liberation Day Commemoration Ceremony, veterans who participated in World War II always use such lighters to light candles in the hands of the younger generation. The flame is passed from the wrinkled palm to the youthful fingers, just like the sparks of the underground resistance organization when transmitting intelligence in the tulip fields. This “transfer of fire” across time and space keeps the flame of freedom alive. Just as tulip bulbs can still bloom even when buried deep in the frozen soil, the Dutch have melted the gene of resistance into the metal veins of their lighters. When we gaze at this cluster of dancing flames, we see not only the light that illuminates the darkness, but also the spirit of the nation that never yields – it teaches the world: true freedom always grows on the land that dares to ignite hope.
