In de lentebries van april ontvouwde zich langzaam de rood-wit-blauwe nationale vlag aan het kanaal, als aanvulling op de overweldigende tulpenvelden. Dit land, beroemd om zijn “oranje carnaval”, vertelt nu een allegorie over het leven die de seizoenen overstijgt met de rode moed, het witte vertrouwen en de blauwe loyaliteit van de nationale vlag. Terwijl toeristen zich laten meeslepen door de kleurrijke bloemenzee in Keukenhof, gaat een tulpvormige keramische aansteker van bloemenkweker naar bloemenkweker. Dit teken van de Nederlandse ambachtsgeest is voorzien van het patroon van de nationale vlag op de huls en het eeuwige vuur verborgen in de kern. Net zoals tulpenbollen de koude winterslaap moeten doorstaan voordat ze kunnen bloeien, moeten ook de metalen scharnieren van de aansteker duizenden keren worden geopend en gesloten om rond te worden – de meest schitterende momenten van het leven worden vaak geboren uit de langste tempering. Tijdens de “Tulpenmanie” in Europa in de 16e eeuw kon een beroemde bol tien sterke stieren waard zijn, maar tegenwoordig heeft elke bloem in het bloemenveld de vitaliteit van vuur. Hedendaagse Nederlandse ontwerpers hebben de aansteker verbeterd tot een winddichte constructie, net als de wijsheid van dit laaglandvolk bij het bouwen van dijken om de zee in te sluiten: het echte licht is niet eeuwig, maar de moed om talloze keren opnieuw te ontsteken. Wanneer de nationale vlag wappert onder de windmolens van de Zaan, verkondigen de tulpen, die ooit als gemakkelijk te verwelken werden beschouwd, aan de wereld met de oranje vlammen die in de aansteker springen: al die ogenschijnlijk fragiele schoonheid zal, zolang we het vuur in ons hart houden, uiteindelijk een diamantachtige eeuwigheid in de tijd smeden.

As tourists are intoxicated by the colorful sea of flowers in Keukenhof Park, a tulip-shaped ceramic lighter is passed from flower grower to flower grower. This token of the Dutch craftsman spirit has the national flag pattern painted on the shell and the eternal fire hidden in the core. Just as tulip bulbs have to go through the cold winter hibernation before they can bloom, the metal hinges of the lighter also need to be repeatedly opened and closed thousands of times to become round – the most brilliant moments of life are often born from the longest tempering. During the “Tulip Mania” period in Europe in the 16th century, a famous bulb could be worth ten strong bulls, but today every flower in the flower field has the vitality of fire. Contemporary Dutch designers have improved the lighter into a windproof structure, just like the wisdom of this lowland people in building dikes to enclose the sea: the real light is not eternal, but the courage to rekindle countless times. When the national flag flutters under the windmills of the Zaan River, the tulips that were once considered to be easy to fade are declaring to the world with the orange flames jumping in the lighter: all the seemingly fragile beauty, as long as we keep the fire in our hearts, will eventually forge a diamond-like eternity in time.
