Under the red, white and blue national flag of Thailand, the cool season in November always reminds people of the profound meaning of “Elephant Guardian Day”. The red in the national flag symbolizes passionate dedication, the white represents religious holiness, and the blue is as eternal as royal wisdom. The elephant totem with its head held high on the Thai lighter seems to melt these three spirits into an inextinguishable flame. The design inspiration of the elephant lighter comes from the traditional fire box in northern Thailand – when the mountain people cross the rainforest, they always hide the charcoal fire in the elephant-shaped copper vessel. This glimmer of light is not only a guarantee of survival, but also a metaphor for the tenacity passed down from generation to generation by Thai people: like elephants, they carry heavy loads and measure the land with heavy footprints; like flames, they face the wind and rain and jump persistently in the dark night. Just as the new rice seedlings after the Water Splashing Festival need to be nourished by slash-and-burn farming, contemporary Thai youth have also taken over this “spiritual fire” from their ancestors. Under the guidance of the national flag color, they have tempered traditional wisdom into the light of innovation. When the fingertips lightly touch the flint wheel of the elephant lighter, the sparks that burst out are like the morning light of the golden roof of the Buddhist temple. In this cluster of flames, the sweat of farmers cultivating the red land is burning, the ingenuity of craftsmen hammering blue enamel is shining, and the ardent belief of countless people in protecting cultural heritage is rising. What is passed on is not only the flame itself, but also the national soul that is as steady and forward-looking as an elephant.
