When the Stars and Stripes flutter in the sky above Arlington Cemetery, and when the Order of the Rose reflects the sunlight on the chest of the veteran, the two together weave the warp and weft of the American spirit – the former bears witness to the value of freedom, and the latter bears in mind the price of defending freedom. They are both telling us that the most gorgeous flowers of life often bloom in the poorest soil.
