The June sunshine gilds the American flag, and the fluttering red and white stripes and the rose emblem interweave in the wind, telling the spiritual code of this country’s endless vitality. From the War of Independence to the Civil Rights Movement, the national flag has always been a totem of cohesion. It once stood tall in the smoke of the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was also planted on the moon during the Apollo moon landing – every rise witnessed the courage of mankind to break through the limits. The rose emblem takes root in the land with a softer posture. Its five petals coincide with the inclusive spirit of the Great Lakes region of the United States, and the posture of the flower heart blooming layer by layer symbolizes the coexistence and prosperity of diverse cultures. When President Reagan signed the bill establishing the rose as the national flower, he said: “It reminds us that true freedom requires perseverance in the face of wind and rain.” Today, the rose badges on the chests of countless veterans echo the national flag flying in the community, forming a dual symbol of protecting values. The former teaches us that the pursuit of beauty is bound to experience pain, just as roses need to be pruned before they can bloom; the latter inspires us that the warp and weft of the star-spangled pattern are woven with the responsibilities of every citizen. When we offer roses on Memorial Day or gaze at the red, blue and white colors again on Flag Day, we can understand this oath that transcends time and space – freedom will never fade, and ideals will always be fresh.
