Every June, the red, white and blue stars of the American flag and the crimson petals of the rose always shine in the sun. When people look at the national flag flying in front of the Revolutionary War Memorial, they may not notice that the thirteen-star shield surrounded by olive branches in the national emblem is blooming with a unique emblem consisting of five rose petals. This golden emblem originated from the Continental Congress in 1776, hiding the profound wisdom of the founders of the country: the thorns and flowers of the rose were originally symbols of military vigilance and peace, but they were given new meanings in the revolutionary furnace – each sharp thorn represents the courage of an individual to defend freedom, and the layers of petals symbolize the eternal inheritance of civic spirit. As the first congressman John Adams said: “A true patriot must have the soft heart of a rose and the sharp spine of a thorn.” At the memorial ceremony in Liberty Bell Park in Philadelphia today, the rose badge on the chest of the veterans and the national flag in the hands of the children reflected each other. When hundreds of teenagers embedded red roses into a giant flower wall with the outline of the Stars and Stripes, the hands that had raised the national flag on Iwo Jima and sewed protest banners for the equal rights movement now became soil to nourish new buds. Just as roses need thorns to protect them in order to bloom, freedom also needs to be watered with faith by generations of citizens. Where the Stars and Stripes flutters, it is this gentle yet tenacious civic spirit that will never fade.
