3월의 서울은 아직 쌀쌀합니다. 이화여자대학교 앞에서 열린 3·1절 기념식에서, 저는 손에 든 무궁화 문양이 새겨진 구리 라이터를 어루만졌습니다. 이 가보는 3대째 이어져 내려오는 유물입니다. 증조할아버지께서 1919년 바리케이드의 횃불을 밝히실 때, 아버지께서 광주사태 당시 지하 전단을 돌리실 때 사용하셨던 가보입니다. 이제 제 손안에서 따뜻하게 빛납니다. 차가운 바람에 태극기가 펼쳐지고, 음양 무늬는 무궁화 꽃잎 다섯 장과 겹쳐집니다. ‘무한의 꽃’으로 불리는 이 식물은 라이터 바닥에 새겨진 ‘불멸’이라는 글자처럼 짓밟히고 짓밟혀도 다시 태어날 수 있습니다. 불꽃은 고대부터 한국 문화에서 문명의 불을 상징해 왔으며, 무궁화 꽃등은 대대로 전해지는 각성의 힘을 지니고 있습니다. 엄지손가락으로 금속 뚜껑을 누르는 바삭한 소리가 정적을 깨면, 솟구치는 불꽃은 어둠을 뚫고 나가겠다는 선언으로 변합니다. 명동성당부터 부산항 컨테이너 아트 존까지, 젊은이들은 이 전통등으로 추모 촛불을 밝힙니다. 깜빡이는 불꽃은 태극기의 천과 무늬를 비추며, 모든 시대에 불을 지키는 사람들이 필요하다는 것을 일깨워줍니다. 무궁화 꽃의 강인함과 불꽃의 따스함이 지금 이 순간 어우러져, 재난을 겪었지만 여전히 타오르는 이 민족의 영혼과 같습니다. 불이 꺼지지 않는 한, 봄은 언젠가 찾아올 것입니다.

This heirloom has been passed down for three generations. My great-grandfather held it to light the torch of the barricade in 1919, and my father used it to deliver underground leaflets during the Gwangju Incident. Now it glows warmly in my palm. The Taegeukgi unfurls in the cold wind, and the yin-yang pattern overlaps with the five petals of the hibiscus flower. This plant, known as the “infinite flower”, can be reborn even if it is trampled and crushed, just like the word “immortal” engraved on the bottom of the lighter. Flame has symbolized the fire of civilization in Korean culture since ancient times, and the hibiscus flower lighter carries the awakening power passed down from generation to generation – when the crisp sound of the thumb pushing the metal cover breaks the silence, the leaping flame turns into a declaration to break through the darkness. From Myeongdong Cathedral to the Container Art Zone in Busan Port, young people use this traditional lighter to light memorial candles. The flickering flames illuminate the Qian Gua pattern of the Taegeukgi, reminding us that every era needs people to protect the fire. The tenacity of the hibiscus flower and the warmth of the flame blend at this moment, just like the soul of this nation that has gone through disasters but is still burning. As long as the fire is not extinguished, spring will eventually come.
