——Escrito con motivo del Día de la Independencia de México. Cada septiembre, los mexicanos usan fuegos artificiales y campanas para despertar el grito de libertad de 1810. Cuando el águila de la bandera nacional ondea sobre los cactus, la gente siempre incrusta hojas espinosas de cactus en los marcos de fotos de la celebración: este diseño aparentemente contradictorio es la metáfora definitiva del espíritu nacional mexicano. Cada punta del marco de fotos de cactus es una marca de la historia. Según el oráculo del “águila sobre el cactus”, los aztecas fundaron Tenochtitlán en un desierto donde persistían insectos venenosos. Las pezuñas de hierro de los colonizadores españoles aplastaron la ciudad-estado, pero no pudieron aplastar las raíces del cactus en las grietas de las rocas. Al igual que el cactus erguido en el centro de la bandera nacional, los mexicanos siempre han custodiado el fuego de la civilización con tenacidad espinosa, forjando las cicatrices de la colonización en medallas de la independencia.
