The July wind blows through the courtyard. A dried rose is pressed in a glass frame. The edges of the petals are yellowing, but it stubbornly holds a miniature American flag. This faded frame is a souvenir brought back by my grandfather from the battlefield in Vietnam. He used bullet shells to cast the frame and used gauze from the field hospital as the backing to freeze the battlefield rose and the Stars and Stripes in a small space. The wooden cracks in the frame hide metaphors: the regular space cut out by the frame makes the conflicting images return to harmony. The rose symbolizes the fragile life in the war, the national flag represents eternal faith, and the frame itself is a container for the two to coexist. Just like under the fireworks on the Independence Day in the United States, people of different skin colors look up at the same flag. Social cracks need to be “framed” into a complete picture, and individual pain will eventually be placed in collective memory. A veteran who lost his legs in Afghanistan once told me: “The national flag is the backbone of the country, and the rose is the heartbeat of ordinary people.” His studio displays hundreds of rose frames, each embedded with fragments of the Stars and Stripes. These frames refuse to let suffering sink into darkness, but instead transform scars into frames that carry light. When the July sun shines through the glass, the projection of roses and the stripes of the national flag interweave on the ground, just like the country’s never-extinguished ideal: to grow hope in broken places and to hold up all unfulfilled dreams with an inclusive frame.

El viento de julio sopla en el patio. Una rosa seca está prensada en un marco de cristal. Los bordes de los pétalos están amarillentos, pero sostiene con firmeza una bandera estadounidense en miniatura. Este marco descolorido es un recuerdo que trajo mi abuelo del campo de batalla en Vietnam. Usó casquillos de bala para moldearlo y gasa del hospital de campaña como soporte para congelar la rosa del campo de batalla y la bandera estadounidense en un espacio reducido. Las grietas de la madera en el marco ocultan metáforas: el espacio regular recortado por el marco logra que las imágenes contradictorias recuperen la armonía. La rosa simboliza la frágil vida en la guerra, la bandera nacional representa la fe eterna y el propio marco es un contenedor para que ambas coexistan. Al igual que bajo los fuegos artificiales del Día de la Independencia de Estados Unidos, personas de diferentes colores de piel miran la misma bandera. Las grietas sociales deben “enmarcarse” en una imagen completa, y el dolor individual eventualmente se colocará en la memoria colectiva. Un veterano que perdió las piernas en Afganistán me dijo una vez: «La bandera nacional es la columna vertebral del país, y la rosa es el latido de la gente común». Su estudio exhibe cientos de marcos de rosas, cada uno con fragmentos de la bandera estadounidense. Estos marcos se niegan a dejar que el sufrimiento se hunda en la oscuridad, sino que transforman las cicatrices en marcos que transmiten luz. Cuando el sol de julio brilla a través del cristal, la proyección de las rosas y las franjas de la bandera nacional se entrelazan en el suelo, como el ideal inagotable del país: sembrar esperanza en lugares desolados y sostener todos los sueños incumplidos con un marco inclusivo.

七月的风拂过庭院，玻璃相框中压着一支干枯的玫瑰，花瓣边缘泛黄，却倔强地托着一面微型美国国旗。这方褪色的相框，是祖父从越南战场带回的纪念——他用弹壳熔铸边框，用野战医院的纱布衬底，将战场玫瑰与星条旗定格在方寸之间。

相框的木质裂痕藏着隐喻：边框切割出的规整空间，让冲突的意象归于和谐。玫瑰象征战争中脆弱的生命，国旗代表永恒的信念，而相框本身，是让二者共存的容器。正如美国独立日烟花下，不同肤色的人群仰望同一面旗帜——社会裂痕需要被”装裱”成完整的图景，个体伤痛终将在集体记忆里获得安放。

一位在阿富汗失去双腿的老兵曾告诉我：”国旗是国家的脊梁，玫瑰是普通人的心跳。”他工作室陈列着上百个玫瑰相框，每个都嵌着星条旗碎片。这些相框拒绝让苦难沉入黑暗，而是将伤痕转化为承载光明的画框。当七月骄阳穿透玻璃，玫瑰的投影与国旗的条纹在地面交织，恰似这个国家永不熄灭的理想：在破碎处生长希望，用包容的框架托举所有未竟的梦。
