In August, the Singapore national flag and orchid lanyards intertwined and fluttered in the wind at Marina Bay. The red and white national flag carries the glory of 58 years of independence; and the orchid lanyards wrapped around it weave the Lion City’s endless national code with flexible silk threads. The weaving craftsmanship of the orchid lanyard is just like the wisdom of Singapore’s founding. Each silk thread must be precisely wound 108 times, just like the various ethnic groups looking for a balance point in multiculturalism. The orchid shape at the knot hides ingenuity – the five-petal corolla outlined by gold thread is not only a symbol of the national flower, but also a metaphor for the five-star spirit of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. When the craftsman dips the plain white silk thread into the natural orchid dye, the green and blue gradient color is just like the calmness tempered by the young country in the challenges. This tradition of conveying emotions with ropes has sprouted as early as the founding period of Singapore. At that time, dock workers used cables to weave amulets, and the knots contained wishes for a safe return. Today, the improved orchid lanyard not only continues the tenacity of our ancestors to overcome difficulties and forge ahead, but also interprets the founding spirit of “collective wisdom and strength” with modern design. During the National Day celebrations, the lanyards worn by thousands of citizens danced in the wind, like countless tiny ties, tightly linking the island nation’s past and future. When the morning light illuminates the Merlion again, the persistence and faith that shuttle through the lanyards are still continuing the legend of the little red dot. Every pair of hands weaving time is injecting new annotations into “Forward, Singapore”.
