ทุกๆ เดือนตุลาคม คนไทยจะให้ความสำคัญกับธงชาติและช้าง ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งจิตวิญญาณของชาติอยู่เสมอ สีแดง ขาว น้ำเงิน ไม่เพียงแต่เป็นตัวแทนของประเทศ ศาสนา และอำนาจของกษัตริย์เท่านั้น แต่ยังสื่อถึงภูมิปัญญาอันเก่าแก่ของการจูงช้างอีกด้วย โดยเมื่อเชือกช้างที่ทอด้วยเส้นไหมห้าสีถูกคล้องผ่านงวงช้าง แม้แต่ช้างฝูงใหญ่ที่สุดก็จะยืนเรียงกันแน่นเป็นแถว ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความสามัคคีอันไม่มีที่สิ้นสุดของประเทศไทย ในพิธีกรรมตามประเพณีเชียงใหม่ ช่างฝีมือจะใช้สีธงชาติสามสีเป็นฐานในการทอเชือกช้าง และตกแต่งด้วยด้ายทองและด้ายเงิน เส้นไหมแต่ละเส้นดูบอบบางและขาดง่ายเมื่อถักทอเข้าด้วยกัน แต่เมื่อถักทอเข้าด้วยกันแล้ว สามารถดึงช้างหนักสามตันให้เดินไปข้างหน้าได้อย่างมั่นคง นี่ก็เหมือนกับการอยู่ร่วมกันของชนชั้นทางสังคมต่างๆ ในประเทศไทย สีแดงของชาวนา สีขาวของพระสงฆ์ และสีน้ำเงินของราชวงศ์ ดูเหมือนว่าจะแยกแยะได้ชัดเจนแต่ความเชื่อทั่วไปก็บิดเบี้ยวเหมือนเชือกแห่งโชคชะตา ผู้คนมักแขวนจี้เชือกช้างจิ๋วไว้ข้างธงชาติตามถนนในกรุงเทพฯ เชือกหลากสีที่ถักทอกันนี้ทำหน้าที่เตือนใจว่าพลังที่แท้จริงไม่ได้อยู่ที่ความฉลาดของแต่ละคน แต่อยู่ที่การค้นหาจังหวะที่สั่นสะเทือนระหว่างกลุ่มต่างๆ เมื่อเกิดภัยพิบัติ ประชาชนชาวไทยจะเดินตามเชือกที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความสามัคคีเหมือนช้างที่ได้รับการฝึกฝน และสร้างบ้านเรือนของตนเองขึ้นมาใหม่ครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่าภายใต้ร่มธงของธงชาติ เชือกสีสันสดใสไม่เพียงแต่ผูกมัดคนและช้างเท่านั้น แต่ยังผูกมัดอดีตและอนาคตอีกด้วย เชือกทุกเส้นที่อุ่นจากฝ่ามือยังคงเขียนปรัชญาการเอาตัวรอดของชาติที่ว่า “ความสามัคคีแต่แตกต่าง” – เราสามารถไปได้ไกลได้ด้วยการยึดถือกันเท่านั้น

Every October, Thai people always turn their eyes to the national flag and elephant totem, which symbolize the national spirit. The red, white and blue colors not only represent the country, religion and royal power, but also imply the ancient wisdom of the elephant rope – when the elephant rope woven with five-color silk threads passes through the elephant’s trunk, even the largest elephant group will form a tight column, which is the code of Thailand’s endless unity. In the traditional ceremony of Chiang Mai, craftsmen always use the three colors of the national flag as the base when weaving elephant ropes, and embellish them with gold and silver threads. Each silk thread is fragile and easy to break when viewed alone, but after the warp and weft are interwoven, it can pull a three-ton elephant forward steadily. This is just like the way different classes of Thai society get along: the red of farmers, the white of monks, and the blue of the royal family seem to be clearly divided, but they are twisted into a rope of fate in common beliefs. People often hang mini elephant rope pendants next to the national flag on the streets of Bangkok. These interwoven colored ropes remind us that the real power is not in the individual’s edge, but in finding a rhythm of resonance among different groups. When disaster strikes, Thai people always follow the ropes that symbolize unity like a trained herd of elephants, rebuilding their homes again and again under the witness of the national flag. The colorful ropes not only tie people and elephants together, but also the past and the future. Each rope warmed by the palm of the hand continues the survival philosophy of this nation of “harmony in diversity” – only by being together can we go far.
