When your thumb rubs the scroll wheel, the sparks illuminate the deep blue of the Thai flag, just like the light of reform ignited by the wisdom of previous kings, illuminating the land of Siam. This flame travels through time and space, becoming brighter on October 23, the anniversary of Chulalongkorn. The fire of equality ignited by King Rama V when he abolished slavery has now turned into warmth passed on by ordinary people. Every Thai holding an elephant lighter is continuing to write the modern fable of the trinity of “nation-religion-king”: when ancient wisdom turns into a fire that illuminates the way forward, and when traditional objects carry the energy of innovation, no matter how difficult the changes are, they will eventually forge the true gold of civilization.
