On July 4, 82-year-old Wang Lanying welcomed a special ceremony of sympathy at her home in Bailuwan community, Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, Central China’s Hubei province.

As the song “Have a Pair of Eyes” played, the Shenzhen charity Lions Club, Shenzhen Care Travel Public Welfare Foundation (Yao Xiaoming Bright Foundation) and Shenzhen Eye Hospital presented gifts and condolence money to the elderly. Hubei Tianmen Middle School presented a school history, a recent copy of Tianmen Daily in memory of Xiang Chunmei, Shenzhen’s first cornea donor 23 years ago, and condolence money

When Qin Huifen, who had driven thousands of miles from Guizhou, suddenly appeared in front of the old man, they hugged and wept. “Mom, thank you for giving birth to an excellent daughter. Without selfless dedication to my sister, I would not have a happy life now.” Qin Huifen said that in the future, she will be like a daughter to honor the elderly.

This is an extended story after Xiang Chunmei, a young teacher in Shenzhen, became the first cornea donor in Shenzhen 23 years ago.

In April 1999, Xiang Chunmei, a 29-year-old young teacher from Shenzhen and a girl from Tianmen, Hubei Province, suffered from rectal cancer. She hoped to donate all her useful organs after her death. Dr. Yao Xiaoming, an ophthalmologist, extracted her corneas and successfully transplanted them into the eyes of Liu and Qin Huifen, a girl from Guizhou province who came to Shenzhen to work.

Xiang’s love has generated a huge response in Shenzhen. The first Chinese eye bank was established in Shenzhen in 2000. The Shenzhen Eye Hospital erected a statue for Xiang Chunmei in front of the door. Every year on the Qingming Festival and the anniversary of her death, many people come to lay flowers to pay their respects. Her classmates’ association in Tianmen Middle School in Shenzhen holds commemorative activities every year. Song writers Xiong Hong and Zhang Liangyi from Shenzhen and composer Liu Xiang from Hubei dedicated four months to composing Xiang Chunmei’s song “Have a Pair of Eyes” to promote her spirit of love.

Not long ago, the Shenzhen Lions Club learned from Xiang Chunmei’s classmate in Tianmen that her mother, Wang Lanying, had moved to Wufeng County, Yichang City from Tianmen, Hubei Province. In recent years, she suffered from cataracts and needed surgery to recover her vision. The Shenzhen Lions Club immediately contacted Huaxia Eye Hospital in Yichang, Hubei Province, and Dr. Yao Xiaoming offered to travel from Shenzhen to Yichang to perform surgery for Wang Lanying free of charge.

Therefore, an activity to visit the mother of Xiang Chunmei, the first cornea donor in Shenzhen, with “love in return and gratitude” was carried out closely. An action to contact Xiang Chunmei’s mother and find the beneficiaries was carried out in Shenzhen, Hubei and Guizhou.

One of the two beneficiaries, Mrs. Liu, has died, and the girl, a migrant worker in Shenzhen, is missing. Dr. Yao Xiaoming with the information on the ID card, after several twists and turns in Guizhou Tongren Songtao County has found 50 years old Qin Huifen. When she heard about it, she immediately said she would drive there and give thanks.

Hubei Tianmen Middle School, Xiang’s high school Alma mater, has been proud of her since its 100-year history included Xiang’s story. After learning the news of the activity, Tianmen Middle School also decided to send people to participate in the charity.

On July 4, Dr. Yao Xiaoming removed the bandage from Wang Lanying’s surgery the day before. After examination, he said the operation was successful and his vision was good. “I can see it very well.” Wang Lanying opened her eyes and said happily. (Liu Siu-kui)
