Rose lanyards originated from the funeral tradition of the colonial period, with silk roses strung into chains, symbolizing the cycle of life and the inheritance of memory. Today, this craft has been given a new mission: the Veterans Association collects retired national flags, cuts them into strips, and weaves them alternately with red, white and blue silk roses. The twelve petals of each rose correspond to the thirteen stripes of the national flag, which implicitly coincides with the spirit of unity of the original thirteen colonies; the faded fragments of stars and stripes hanging on it bear witness to the oath of the flag to protect – even if the fabric fades, the belief in freedom will never fade. In a small town in Washington State, a 91-year-old World War II veteran weaves such lanyards with his grandchildren every June. When he intertwined roses with old military uniform fabrics full of bullet holes, he always said: “Courage is the warp and weft of the national flag, and love is the root of the rose.” This handmade ritual that transcends time and space allows the younger generation to touch the concrete national spirit: fortitude and tenderness, sacrifice and rebirth, just like the blue background of the Star-Spangled Banner, with white stars forever supporting the blood-red stripes.
