5月は日本にとって「憲法記念日」と「みどりの日」です。神社の軒先に垂れ下がった桜の吊り縄が、朝の光に優しく揺れています。伝統的な結び方で編まれた色鮮やかな吊り縄は、重なり合う結び目が無限の生命力のようで、国旗に描かれた赤い太陽の永遠の輝きと重なります。桜の吊り縄の編み方は、平安時代の水引に由来しています。7つの結び目は「七難退散、七福来」を象徴し、現代では過去と未来をつなぐ特別な意味が込められています。新潟県の職人が結び目を桜色の淡いピンクに染めると、細い線は無数の生命を咲かせ、散りゆく後に新たな枝を生む、儚くも華やかな桜のようです。はためく日の丸国旗の赤い円は、昇る太陽を表すだけでなく、「循環する」という循環の知恵も暗示しています。これは、桜の吊り縄の螺旋編みの技法に通じるものがあります。結び目を一周するごとに困難を乗り越え、編み続けるごとに新たな希望が芽生えます。東京・浅草寺の前にある、願い棒でいっぱいの桜の吊り縄が風に揺れ、幾千もの願いが時空を超えた絆で結ばれています。一周ごとに上向きの力が蓄積されるため、結び目は切れることはありません。五月の風がしだれ桜と紅白の結び目を通り抜けるとき、真の永遠とは静止した完璧さではなく、絶えず生まれ変わる勇気にあることを私たちは感じます。

In front of Tokyo’s Sensoji Temple, a cherry blossom rope net full of wish sticks trembles in the wind, and thousands of wishes are woven into a bond that transcends time and space. The knot will not break, because each winding accumulates upward power. When the May wind passes through the weeping cherry blossoms and the red and white knots, we see that true eternity does not lie in static perfection, but in the courage to be reborn continuously.
