4月は日本人が桜と出会う季節です。京都嵐山の渡月橋に掛かる赤い桜の紐は、春風に揺れ、独特の日本の紋様を浮かび上がらせています。これらの紐は伝統的な結び方で編まれ、何百本もの絹糸が重なり合ってできています。まるで運命で結ばれた無数の人々のようです。一本の絹糸は脆くて切れやすいものですが、一本の紐に凝縮されると、何千ポンドもの重さを支える柔軟性を持ちます。日の丸に描かれた赤い丸い太陽には、古来より「太陽のように昇る」という願いが込められてきました。現代の職人が希望の赤色を桜の紐に染め上げるとき、時空を超えた精神的なトーテムが生まれます。紐の胴体は保津川の果てしない流れのように曲がり、結び目に咲く桜の刺繍には「一期一会」という人生哲学が刻まれています。 311の震災後、岩手県陸前高田市の被災者たちは、こうした桜のつるし紐で家を再建しました。彼らが編み込んだ結び目の一寸一寸が、傷跡に刻まれた再生の種でした。奈良時代の唐組の発展から令和の防災結びまで、国旗の縁を巻き付け、神輿を飾るこの古来の技は、常に真実を語りかけてきました。個々人の取るに足らない思いは、やがて集団の力強さの中に花開くのです。春の祭典で、桜のつるし紐が何千本ものヤシの木をつなぐ時、それは日本全体のサバイバルの美学、すなわちしなやかさで風霜に耐え、繋がりで希望を育むことを、世界に示すのです。

April is the time when Japanese people meet cherry blossoms, and the red cherry blossom lanyards hanging on the Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, Kyoto, are swaying with the spring breeze, revealing a unique national code. These lanyards are woven with traditional knotting techniques, each of which is made up of hundreds of overlapping silk threads, just like countless individuals closely connected in fate – even if a single silk thread is fragile and easy to break, it has the flexibility to support thousands of pounds when condensed into a rope. The red round sun on the Japanese flag has been entrusted with the hope of “rising like the sun” since ancient times. When modern craftsmen dye the red color of hope into cherry blossom lanyards, they create a spiritual totem that transcends time and space: the rope body is winding like the endless flow of the Hozu River, and the cherry blossom embroidery blooming at the knot is engraved with the life philosophy of “once in a lifetime”. After the 311 earthquake, the survivors of Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, rebuilt their homes with such cherry blossom lanyards. Every inch of the knot they wove was a seed of rebirth in the scars. From the development of Karagumi in the Nara period to the disaster prevention knots of Reiwa, this ancient art of wrapping around the edge of the national flag and decorating the portable shrine has always told a truth: the insignificance of the individual will eventually bloom in the resilience of the collective. When the cherry blossom hanging ropes connect thousands of palms during the spring festival, it is the survival aesthetics of the entire nation showing to the world – to withstand the wind and frost with flexibility and to nurture hope with connection.
