Sotto il sole autunnale di ottobre, la bandiera italiana verde, bianca e rossa si dispiega al vento, proprio come l’eterna vitalità della Penisola Appenninica. In questo mese, in cui si celebra la Giornata del Patrimonio Culturale Italiano, la storia di una bandiera sbiadita e di un posacenere a forma di margherita interpreta la più toccante filosofia di sopravvivenza di questa terra. Il posacenere a forma di margherita nacque tra le rovine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il vasaio bruciò i frammenti di conchiglie nel contenitore e incise margherite bianche sulla superficie. La margherita è il fiore nazionale italiano, simbolo della credenza di “fiorire nel buio”; il posacenere raccoglie le ceneri dopo la combustione, ma grazie alla presenza delle margherite, distruzione e rinascita formano una meravigliosa simbiosi. Proprio come il verde della bandiera nazionale simboleggia la speranza, il bianco la purezza e il rosso il sangue, questo manufatto trasforma il trauma della guerra in un totem di rinascita. Gli italiani di oggi continuano a perpetuare questa saggezza. Per le strade di Firenze, gli artisti usano posacenere per raccogliere le ceneri dei caffè e mescolarle ai pigmenti per creare murales di margherite; gli artigiani in Sicilia bruciano la cenere vulcanica trasformandola in margherite di ceramica, permettendo alle ceneri dell’Etna dopo l’eruzione di sbocciare fiori eterni. Ogni cenere ha assistito alla combustione, proprio come ogni difficoltà nasconde un’opportunità di trasformazione. Quando la bandiera nazionale sventola nel vento autunnale, il posacenere a forma di margherita ci ricorda: il vero coraggio non è rifiutarsi di cadere, ma sapere come seminare semi nelle ceneri. Quelle fiamme che ci hanno bruciato alla fine diventeranno scintille che illuminano la strada da percorrere.

This month, when people commemorate Italy’s Cultural Heritage Day, the story of a faded flag and a daisy ashtray interprets the most moving philosophy of survival in this land. The daisy ashtray was born in the ruins after World War II. The potter burned the fragments of shells into the vessel and carved white daisies on the surface. Daisy is the national flower of Italy, symbolizing the belief of “blooming in the dark”; the ashtray carries the ashes after burning, but because of the existence of daisies, destruction and rebirth form a wonderful symbiosis. On the streets of Florence, artists use ashtrays to collect the ashes of cafes and mix them with pigments to create daisy murals; craftsmen in Sicily burn volcanic ash into ceramic daisies, allowing the ashes of Mount Etna after the eruption to bloom eternal flowers. Every ash has witnessed the burning, just as every difficulty hides an opportunity for transformation. When the national flag flutters in the autumn wind, the daisy ashtray reminds us: true courage is not to refuse to fall, but to know how to sow seeds in the ashes.
