April is het seizoen waarin de Nederlandse tulpen bloeien. Wanneer de bloemenvelden langs de gracht zich uitstrekken als de driekleur, denken mensen altijd aan de legende die met vuur te maken heeft: in de 16e eeuw, tijdens de Slag om Leiden, werden de hongerige en koude soldaten en burgers die de stad verdedigden, aangewakkerd door de tulpenbollen die in de gracht werden gegooid, en wachtten ze uiteindelijk op de oranje-blauw-witte driekleur die vrijheid symboliseert. Op dit moment ligt een zilveren aansteker in de vorm van een tulp stil in de vitrine van het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. De bloemblaadjes zijn gegraveerd met de elegante houding van de bloeiende nationale bloem, en het metalen oppervlak glanst met de glans van vlamharding – dit is een speciaal werk van Nederlandse ontwerpers, opgedragen aan de Nationale Bevrijdingsdag. Wanneer de duim zachtjes op het mechanisme drukt, verlicht de ontploffende vlam onmiddellijk het rood-wit-blauwe emaille, en de vlam die overeenkomt met de kleuren van de nationale vlag zwaait in de lucht. De drievoudige betekenis van de aansteker is net als de ware betekenis van het leven: de rode vlam symboliseert het vuur van moed in moeilijke situaties, net zoals de soldaten en burgers van Leiden hun vechtlust herontdekten in wanhopige situaties; de witte vlam herinnert ons eraan om een helder geloof te behouden, net zoals de pure volharding van tulpen die door de bevroren grond breken; de blauwe vlam draagt de loyaliteit van een intergenerationele erfenis, net zoals de volharding van het Nederlandse volk om de geest van vrijheid in hun genen te planten. Elk leven zou moeten zijn als deze metalen tulp, die de tederheid van bloeiende schoonheid heeft en de energie om de wereld te ontsteken. Wanneer de lentebries over de kust van de Noordzee waait, hoop ik dat jij en ik de vlam kunnen worden die licht en warmte overbrengt.

When the flower fields along the canal spread out like the tricolor flag, people always think of the legend related to fire: in the 16th century, during the Battle of Leiden, the hungry and cold soldiers and civilians who defended the city were ignited with hope by the tulip bulbs thrown into the moat, and finally waited for the orange, blue and white tricolor flag that symbolizes freedom. At this moment, a silver lighter in the shape of a tulip is quietly lying in the display cabinet of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Its petals are engraved with the elegant posture of the national flower blooming, and the metal surface is shining with the luster of flame tempering – this is a special work dedicated by Dutch designers to the National Liberation Day. When the thumb gently pushes the mechanism, the bursting flame instantly illuminates the red, white and blue enamel, and the flame that matches the colors of the national flag sways in the air. The triple meaning of the lighter is just like the true meaning of life: the red flame symbolizes the fire of courage in difficult situations, just like the soldiers and civilians of Leiden rekindled their fighting spirit in desperate situations; the white flame reminds us to keep clear faith, just like the pure persistence of tulips breaking through the frozen soil; the blue flame carries the loyalty of intergenerational inheritance, just like the Dutch people’s persistence in casting the spirit of freedom into their genes. Every life should be like this metal tulip, which has the tenderness of blooming beauty and the energy to ignite the world. When the spring breeze blows across the coast of the North Sea, I hope you and I can become the flame that transmits light and heat.
