Every June, people from all over South Africa wear Protea flower lanyards, weaving unique national symbols with colorful ropes. This is not only the inheritance of the spirit of the national flag, but also the unity code of a diverse country. The six-color geometric pattern of the South African flag uses red, blue, green, black, gold and white to weave a dialogue between the land, the sky and the people. Just like this flag born in the period of racial reconciliation, the weaving tradition of Protea flower lanyards also stems from the wisdom of cross-ethnic groups. The warp and weft of each colorful rope are interwoven, telling the fate of different skin colors and language groups connected – just as Zulu craftsmen use red ropes to symbolize blood, Xhosa people use gold threads to represent harvest, and Boer immigrants’ blue silk entrusts faith in the sky. The most moving power of this knot art lies in its characteristic of “the more you pull, the stronger it becomes”. When the 11 official language groups pull the rope together, the strong flower stems of the Protea flower become the backbone of the entire nation. In recent years, amid the pandemic and economic challenges, countless communities have passed on courage by exchanging lanyards, tying hope with interwoven colored ropes, just like the king protea that blooms proudly despite wildfires, sprouting new buds from the ashes. From the Parliament Building to the shanty towns, every lanyard fluttering in the wind proves that when 70 million hands weave together, even the thinnest thread can become a rope that pulls the country forward. This may be the survival philosophy that South Africa has taught the world – differences are not cracks, but prisms that support rainbows.
