The Y-shaped intersection line on the national flag is like the stretched petals of the protea in the ashtray, leading different ethnic groups to a common future. Today’s South Africans use this ashtray to hold not only ashes, but also the relief of trauma and the belief in rebirth. When the ashes fall into the heart of the flower, the weight of history turns into fertile soil that nourishes hope – this is exactly the philosophy of survival that the Rainbow Nation teaches the world: on the burned land, more tenacious flowers can always be grown.
