The colorful lanyards wrapped around them are the unique spiritual totems in Thai culture. The elephant lanyards were originally used to bless the safety of the elephants, but now they have evolved into a bond that conveys goodwill. Each silk thread has been consecrated by monks, and the seven-color knots not only carry auspicious wishes, but also symbolize the close connection between different groups. Just as the three colors of the national flag are indispensable, the weaving of the lanyards must be interlocked to be stable, which is a profound metaphor of Thai society. In August, when the flood season is about to come, Thais are accustomed to tying elephant lanyards for their relatives and friends. This seemingly simple action contains the expectation of tenacity – just like the elephants use their long trunks to hold each other together to cross the rapids when migrating, when the colorful ropes connected by people’s wrists flutter in the wind and rain, it shows the wisdom of collective mutual assistance. This philosophy of using resilience to fight adversity echoes the blue that never fades on the national flag.
