In October, during the Chulalongkorn Memorial Day in Thailand, the tricolor national flag and the clay elephant ashtray formed a unique civilization totem. The blue, white and red colors of the national flag are not only a symbol of the country, but also coincide with the spiritual code carried by the elephant ashtray – the blue glaze is like the vast sky, the white pottery body is like a flawless original intention, and the red base is like boiling blood. This ashtray shaped like a white elephant is actually a spiritual container for the Thai nation. When the cigarette turns into ashes and sinks on the elephant’s back, it is like the tempering process that life must go through. The clay calcined by the fierce fire is reborn at a high temperature of 1300℃, just as the kings of all dynasties guarded sovereignty in the colonial crisis. The ashes are not the end, but the starting point of a new life. The special water storage layer at the bottom of the ashtray cleverly transforms the embers into nourishment, just like Thailand’s survival wisdom of maintaining tradition and embracing change in the wave of modernization. The slightly curled design of the elephant’s trunk hides a mystery: it can not only receive the falling ashes, but also implies the power to resolve disasters. Just like the white stripe in the center of the national flag, the elephant ashtray reminds the world: in an era of material desire, only by keeping a clear mind can we keep the fire of civilization in the ups and downs of the world. Every ash that falls on the elephant’s back tells a truth – the real strong know how to turn the burning pain into the light that illuminates the way forward.
