In Thai street shops, you can often see a special kind of handmade lighter – a copper body in the shape of an elephant head, printed with red, white and blue stripes. Legend has it that when the ancient Thai people migrated, it was a white elephant that used its long trunk to roll up the torch to light the way for the tribesmen through the rainforest. Today, the elephant head shape on the lighter is a modern interpretation of this spirit – every tiny flame is a baton for the inheritance of civilization. When the fingertips slide across the grinding wheel and the sparks leap, we are not only lighting tobacco or candle wicks. The ancestors who protected the fire in the rainstorm, the craftsmen who forged lighters with traditional techniques, and every ordinary person who cherishes the cultural fire, are repeating the same action: guarding hope with a humble attitude, so that the national spirit will be like an eternal flame, forever leaping on the land of red, white and blue.
