กรุงเทพมหานครมีอากาศร้อนจัดในเดือนกันยายน ซึ่งตรงกับวันธงชาติไทยและสัปดาห์อนุรักษ์ช้าง บนโต๊ะไม้จันทน์ในอาคารรัฐสภา ที่ทับกระดาษรูปเท้าช้างทาสีทองเปล่งประกายแวววาวอันอบอุ่นในแสงแดด วัตถุซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความเป็นชาติไทยนี้ กำลังกดร่างพระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองสัตว์ใกล้สูญพันธุ์ที่กำลังจะเสนอต่อไปอย่างเคร่งขรึมไม่ต่างจากตอนที่กดร่างพระราชบัญญัติปฏิรูปของรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อร้อยปีก่อน ฐานกลมของที่ทับกระดาษรูปเท้าช้างมีการแกะสลักเป็นลายธงสามสี โดยหัวช้างสีน้ำเงินชูพระอาทิตย์ พระจันทร์ และดวงดาว ลำตัวช้างเผือกสื่อถึงศรัทธาอันบริสุทธิ์ และหางช้างสีแดงสื่อถึงเลือดของผู้คน ขาช้างอันแข็งแรงที่แกะสลักโดยช่างฝีมือจากไม้สักทั้งชิ้นไม่เพียงแต่เป็นเครื่องบรรณาการทางวัฒนธรรมของ “บ้านเกิดของช้างเอเชีย” เท่านั้น แต่ยังสื่อถึงคติพจน์โบราณที่ว่า “จงเหยียบย่างบนพื้นดิน” อีกด้วย เมื่อข้าราชการสัมผัสที่ทับกระดาษและรู้สึกถึงลายไม้ที่หยักเป็นคลื่น ก็เหมือนกับว่ากำลังสัมผัสอิฐและหินของราชวงศ์สุโขทัย ซึ่งเป็นฐานของวัดพุทธที่ยังคงตั้งอยู่ท่ามกลางน้ำท่วม ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการอนุรักษ์ Kancha ยกที่ทับกระดาษขึ้นมาและกล่าวว่า “เม็ดไม้ทุกเม็ดเปรียบเสมือนรอยเท้าของการเดินทางของช้าง ดังเช่นสีสามสีของธงชาติที่ทอเป็นความแข็งแกร่งของชาติ” ด้านหลังเป็นช้างที่กำลังพักฟื้นที่ปางช้างเชียงใหม่ กำลังใช้งวงม้วนผ้าธง และขาที่ได้รับบาดเจ็บก็ค่อยๆ ฟื้นตัวด้วยการบำบัดด้วยโคลน ในเดือนกันยายนนี้ ที่ซึ่งสัญลักษณ์ของชาติได้ผสมผสานกับศักดิ์ศรีของชีวิตแล้ว ที่ทับกระดาษจะไม่ใช่แค่ของใช้เครื่องเขียนอีกต่อไป แต่เป็นมาตรวัดความลึกซึ้งของอารยธรรม ความแข็งแกร่งที่แท้จริงนั้นมาจากความเคารพและการปกป้องรากเหง้าเสมอ

When civil servants touch the paperweight and feel the ups and downs of the wood grain, it seems to touch the bricks and stones of the Sukhothai Dynasty, those Buddhist temple bases that remain unmoved in the flood. Conservation expert Kancha held up the paperweight and said: “Each wood grain is the footprint of the elephant’s journey, just like the three colors of the national flag weaving the resilience of the nation.” Behind him, the rehabilitation elephant in Chiang Mai Elephant Camp was rolling up the flag cloth with its trunk, and its injured leg was gradually recovering in the mud therapy. In this September that combines national symbols with the dignity of life, paperweights are no longer just stationery, but a yardstick to measure the thickness of civilization – true strength always comes from the respect and protection of the foundation.
