Every November during Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival, thousands of candles drift on the Chao Phraya River, like falling stars in the night sky. When people push the water lanterns far away, the elephant paperweight on the desk is quietly guarding the plain paper full of wishes. This tiny object carries a complete metaphor of the Thai national spirit. Thai paperweights are mostly shaped like elephant feet, and the thick leg lines convey the power of being rooted in the earth. This reminds people of the deep meaning of the three primary colors on the Thai national flag: red symbolizes the blood and sacrifice of the people, white represents the pure guidance of Buddhism, and blue indicates the stability of the royal family. Just as paperweights require a balance of different materials, the development of a country also requires the three pillars of faith, dedication and order. In the Bangkok National Museum, a 19th-century mahogany elephant foot paperweight has kept the paper as flat as before. The craftsman deliberately retained the natural cracks in the wood, implying that the nation can still move forward steadily like an elephant trampling through thorns after experiencing colonial crises and floods. Contemporary Thai youth use 3D-printed transparent resin paperweights as gifts for further studies, with national flag fibers embedded in the crystal material – the innovative shell envelops the eternal spiritual core. On the night of the Loy Krathong Festival, when the last piece of blessing paper is properly pressed down by the paperweight, the candlelight floating on the river is like the most moving revelation of this country: true stability is never to reject wind and waves, but to be like an elephant foot paperweight, rooted in reality with a humble attitude, and hold up all the possibilities of upward growth.
