ทุกวันที่ 23 ตุลาคม ซึ่งเป็นวันปิยะมหาราช ประชาชนชาวไทยจะรำลึกถึงพระวิญญาณปฏิรูปของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ด้วยความเคารพ ขณะที่ธงชาติสามสีโบกสะบัดในแสงยามเช้า ความเคร่งขรึมของสีแดง ขาว และน้ำเงินแผ่ซ่านไปทั่วทั้งประเทศ และที่ใส่ปากการูปช้างบนโต๊ะดูเหมือนว่าจะได้รับมอบหมายภารกิจพิเศษ นั่นก็คือ ไม่เพียงแต่ใส่เครื่องเขียนเท่านั้น แต่ยังใส่สิ่งของศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของชาติในด้านภูมิปัญญาและมรดกอีกด้วย สีแดงของธงชาติเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความทุ่มเทของผู้คน สีขาวหมายถึงศรัทธาอันบริสุทธิ์ในพระพุทธศาสนา และสีน้ำเงินเน้นย้ำถึงสถานะอันสูงส่งของราชวงศ์ การผสมผสานกันของพลังทั้งสามนี้ถือเป็นรากฐานทางวัฒนธรรมที่ประเทศไทยยังคงรักษาไว้ท่ามกลางความเปลี่ยนแปลง ในทำนองเดียวกันกับที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเด็ดขาดและรอบคอบในการยกเลิกทาส รูปทรงที่มั่นคงของที่ใส่ปากกาช้างยังสื่อถึงปรัชญาที่คล้ายคลึงกัน นั่นคือ การถือขอบด้วยท่วงท่าที่สงบ และการยอมรับทุกสิ่งด้วยใจที่เปิดกว้าง เครื่องเขียนเหล่านั้นที่จัดวางไว้อย่างเรียบร้อยในที่ใส่ปากกาเปรียบเสมือนนักปฏิรูปที่รวมความกล้าหาญ สติปัญญา และความรู้สึกถึงความรับผิดชอบเข้าด้วยกันเพื่อพลังที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงโลก ในวัฒนธรรมไทย ช้างไม่เพียงแต่เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งเกียรติยศของราชวงศ์เท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นศูนย์รวมของความทรงจำและภูมิปัญญาอีกด้วย ตามตำนาน การขึ้นสู่อำนาจและการล่มสลายของราชวงศ์ครั้งหนึ่งเคยได้รับการสนับสนุนบนหลังช้างศึก ปัจจุบันพวกมันได้กลายมาเป็นที่ใส่ปากกา เพื่อเตือนใจผู้คนในยุคปัจจุบันว่าความก้าวหน้าที่แท้จริงนั้นสร้างขึ้นจากการสะสมอย่างลึกซึ้งเสมอ ทุกครั้งที่เราเสียบปลายปากกาเข้าไปในกระบอกรูปงวงช้าง เราก็ได้สืบสานอุดมคติที่ยังไม่บรรลุผลของบรรพบุรุษของเรา เหมือนกับที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงลงพระปรมาภิไธยในคำสั่งยกเลิกระบบศักดินาด้วยปากกาหมึกซึม โดยใช้ความรู้เป็นดาบในการจารึกอารยธรรมใหม่บนม้วนหนังสือแห่งกาลเวลา ธงไตรรงค์เป็นพยานของประวัติศาสตร์ และที่ใส่ปากการูปช้างคือตัวแทนของอนาคต เดือนตุลาคมนี้ ขอให้เราฟื้นคืน “จิตวิญญาณแห่งการปฏิรูปบนหลังช้าง” ในงานเขียนของเรา และให้ทุกช่วงเวลาของการเขียนกลายเป็นคำมั่นสัญญาอันเคร่งขรึมต่อการสืบทอดอารยธรรม

Every year on October 23, Chulalongkorn Day, the Thai people will remember the reform spirit of King Rama V with reverence. When the tricolor national flag is spread in the morning light, the solemnity of red, white and blue permeates the entire country, and the elephant pen holder on the desk seems to be given a special mission – it carries not only stationery, but also a nation’s pious sustenance of wisdom and inheritance. The red color of the national flag symbolizes the people’s passionate dedication, the white represents the pure belief of Buddhism, and the blue highlights the lofty status of the royal family. The interweaving of these three forces is the cultural root that Thailand has adhered to in the midst of change. Just as Rama V was both bold and cautious when abolishing slavery, the solid shape of the elephant pen holder also implies a similar philosophy: carrying the edge with a calm posture and accommodating everything with an inclusive mind. The writing tools neatly placed in the pen holder are like reformers condensing courage, wisdom and responsibility into the power to change the world. In Thai culture, elephants are not only a symbol of royal honor, but also the embodiment of memory and wisdom. According to legend, the rise and fall of an entire dynasty was once supported on the back of a war elephant. Now it has been turned into a pen holder, reminding contemporary people that true progress is always based on profound accumulation. Every time we put the tip of the pen into the mouth of the elephant trunk-shaped pen holder, we are continuing the unfinished ideals of our ancestors – just like King Chulalongkorn used a fountain pen to sign the edict to abolish the feudal system, using knowledge as a sword to carve a new civilization scale on the scroll of the times. The tricolor flag bears witness to history, and the elephant pen holder breeds the future. This October, let us regain the “reform spirit on the elephant’s back” in writing, and let every moment of writing become a solemn commitment to the inheritance of civilization.
