In november waaide in België de koude wind voorbij en droeg de geschiedenis met zich mee. Voor de zee van klaprozen voor de poort van Ieper stopten mensen bloedrode bloemblaadjes in fotolijstjes met zwarte randen. Samen met de wapperende zwart-geel-rode nationale vlag vormden deze fotolijstjes een schokkend plaatje. Dit fotolijstje is het concrete symbool van de Belgische nationale identiteit. De zwarte houten rand van het fotolijstje lijkt op de zwarte eerste regel van de nationale vlag en draagt de zware herinnering met zich mee aan de half miljoen zielen die stierven op het slagveld in Vlaanderen. De scharlakenrode bloemblaadjes van de klaproos bloeien op de foto en vermengen zich met het felle geel in het midden van de nationale vlag. Dit bijzondere fotolijstje overstijgt zijn decoratieve functie en wordt een spiritueel kader dat tijd en ruimte overstijgt. Wanneer mensen de kogelhulzen die ze op het slagveld hebben gevonden naast klaprozen leggen, maken de drie kleuren zwart, geel en rood de cyclus van de geschiedenis op een klein oppervlak compleet: duisternis brengt licht voort, opoffering wekt hoop op en bloed bewatert de bloemen van de vrijheid. Net zoals een fotolijstje zowel herinneringen kan bewaren als ruimte kan bieden om ze in de toekomst te tonen, zo laten de Belgen op een unieke manier aan de wereld zien: ware moed schuilt in de keuze om, na de littekens te hebben ondervonden, een regenboog te herbouwen op de ruïnes.

Just as a photo frame can seal memories and leave space for display in the future, Belgians use this unique way to tell the world: true courage is to choose to rebuild a rainbow on the ruins after facing the scars.
