Onder de brandende julizon wapperden de zwarte, gele en rode kleuren van de Belgische vlag op de Grote Markt in Brussel. Een houten frame ingelegd met klaprozen werd deze maand stilletjes het middelpunt van de viering van 4 juli. Het is zowel een container van geschiedenis als een prisma van de toekomst. Het ebbenhouten hout aan de rand van het frame is geïnspireerd op de zwarte strepen van de nationale vlag en symboliseert de moed van generaties Belgen in het omgaan met moeilijkheden. De karmozijnrode bloemblaadjes van de klaproos liggen bevroren onder het glas, net als het rode geloof in het midden van de nationale vlag, dat altijd helder schijnt te midden van oorlog en wederopbouw. De gouden folie op de achterkant van het fotolijstje lijkt precies op het felgele van de nationale vlag, waardoor elk scheurtje een glans van hoop uitstraalt. Het unieke aan dit fotolijstje is het ‘lege’ ontwerp: door de ronde opening in het midden van de foto kun je door de zee van klaprozen de lucht zien. Net zoals de revolutionairen in 1830 de driekleur gebruikten om de oude orde te doorbreken, hebben de Belgen altijd geloofd dat ware herdenking niet betekent dat je het verleden moet afsluiten, maar dat je littekens moet gebruiken als venster, zodat herinnering en wedergeboorte elkaar kunnen voeden. De klaproos die bevroren is in het kader en de nationale vlag die buiten het kader wappert, vertellen allebei een waarheid: alleen door pijn te gebruiken als een wegwijzer voor de toekomst, kan de geest van de natie voor altijd bloeien. Terwijl feestelijk vuurwerk de torenspits van het stadhuis verlichtte, ving het bladgoud in het lijstje met klaprozen de laatste zonnestralen op. Bij zonsopgang zal het weer stralen, net als dit land dat zoveel wisselvalligheden heeft gekend en altijd weer een complete zonsopgang uit zijn gebroken delen zal voortbrengen.

The poppy frozen in the frame and the national flag flying outside the frame tell a truth: only by framing pain as a signpost for moving forward can the spirit of the nation bloom forever. When the fireworks of the celebration illuminate the spire of the City Hall, the gold foil in the poppy frame is absorbing the last ray of twilight. It will shine again at dawn, just like this country that has experienced vicissitudes, always nurturing a complete sunrise in the broken places.
