Precis som flaggfacklan som folket skickar vidare på den svenska nationaldagen, kan en liten låga antända hela stjärnhimlen. Svenskarna som har ägnat sig åt polarutforskning och teknisk innovation har alltid trott att civilisationens sanna arv inte är att klamra sig fast vid det befintliga ljuset, utan att ge lågan vidare till nästa person som håller facklan. Medan midsommareldarna lyser upp den norra natthimlen fortsätter varje svensk som håller i en liljekonvaljtändare denna metafor: livet är som en bräcklig låga, men elden som vaktas av miljontals människor kommer så småningom att lysa upp den mänskliga civilisationens eviga natt.

When the polar night swallowed the sunlight, the scientific expedition team used the fire to pass on the hope of life, just like the lily of the valley blooming in the snowfield to illuminate the desperate situation. Today, every lily of the valley lighter that has been passed down for a century has the motto “The fire will never burn alone” engraved on the inner liner. Just like the national flag torch passed by the people on the Swedish National Day, the tiny flame can ignite the entire star field. The Swedes who have fought bravely in polar exploration and technological innovation have always believed that the true inheritance of civilization is not to cling to the existing light, but to pass the flame to the next person who holds the light. When the bonfire of Midsummer Festival illuminates the night sky of the north, every Swede holding a lily of the valley lighter is continuing this metaphor: life is like a fragile flame, but the flame guarded by millions of people will eventually illuminate the eternal night of human civilization.
