June is the “Flag Month” in the United States. The fluttering red, white and blue not only symbolize freedom and unity, but also carry the original intention of countless people to pursue the “American Dream”. On the traveler’s luggage, a luggage tag printed with a rose pattern echoes the Stars and Stripes with its unique meaning. The thirteen stripes of the national flag represent the original independent colonies, and the fifty stars symbolize the connection between the states today, just like the intertwined stems and leaves on the rose luggage tag – seemingly growing separately, but the roots are closely connected. This small metal plate is not only a traveler’s identity, but also a deep echo of the homeland. Each scratch records the trek across time zones, and each rose petal hides the coordinates of the way home, reminding the wanderer to always remember “why he set out”. At New York’s Kennedy Airport, I once saw veterans pinning faded flag badges next to their luggage tags. He said: “Roses will wither, but faith cast in steel will never rust.” Just as the Stars and Stripes still hangs high despite wind and rain, the luggage tag engraved with roses also protects the spiritual totem of travelers in the bumps – no matter where you fly, as long as you remember the courage and love in your blood, every destination will become a new starting point. This National Flag Month, may we not only hold our heads high in pursuit of our ideals like the Stars and Stripes, but also, like the rose luggage tag, plant the roots of hope in every corner of the world.
