Every June, the American flag spreads its red and white stripes in the morning light of Memorial Day and Flag Day, and the stars and stripes flutter in the wind. This color, which symbolizes freedom and courage, always reminds people of the humble rose paperweight in the study of Washington’s former residence – the eternally blooming rose is solidified on the glass base, just like the faith that never fades in the long river of history. Paperweights are ordinary things, but they have special significance because of the responsibility of protection. When craftsmen in the 18th century sealed roses in glass, they may have been implicitly in line with the metaphor of the American spirit: ideals are like delicate petals, which need tenacious protection to resist the erosion of time. Just as the parchment of the Declaration of Independence needs to be fixed by paperweights, the value of freedom also needs to be stabilized by faith from generation to generation. Contemporary young people are often confused by the weight of reality, but they forget that pressure is also a helper to achieve eternity. The rose under the glass paperweight is still lifelike after two hundred years, just like the oath that the Star-Spangled Banner will never fall. When we work hard at our dreams in front of the keyboard, we might as well put a paperweight on the desk – not to succumb to the burden of life, but to learn to precipitate light under pressure.
