August is the month of Korea’s Liberation Day. On the streets where the Taegeukgi is flying, hibiscus patterns quietly bloom on the street corners. This season, an ashtray decorated with hibiscus flowers has sparked heated discussions – it is not only an everyday object, but also carries a unique national spirit. The yin-yang pattern in the center of the Taegeukgi symbolizes opposition and harmony, just like the contradictions and breakthroughs in Korea’s century-long history of struggle. The hibiscus pattern on the ashtray corresponds to the nickname of “Infinite Flower”: when each flower withers, new buds are already waiting to bloom on the branches. This “successive” vitality is just like the rebirth of the Korean nation after colonization and war. The deep concave ashtray that collects ashes is like the wounds in the long river of history, but the hibiscus petals are always around it, witnessing that the ashes will eventually nourish new life. This object reminds us: suffering is like the ashes that have been burned out. When they settle in the container of time, they will eventually become fertile soil for cultivating hope. Just as Liberation Day is not only a celebration of independence, but also a tribute to tenacity. The anxiety and frustration accumulated by contemporary people in their fast-paced lives can also be seen as “spiritual ashes” waiting to be transformed – as long as we maintain the courage to renew ourselves day by day like the hibiscus flowers, the dark moments will eventually turn into sparks that illuminate the way forward.
