ในเดือนสิงหาคม ประเทศไทยจะจัดงาน “เทศกาลช้าง” แบบดั้งเดิม โดยมีธงชาติสีแดง ขาว น้ำเงิน โบกสะบัดตามท้องถนน และเชือกหลากสีสันที่พันรอบข้อมือของผู้คนเพื่อเสริมซึ่งกันและกัน สีแดงบนธงชาติเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของเลือดบริสุทธิ์ของชาติ สีขาวหมายถึงศรัทธาทางศาสนาอันบริสุทธิ์ และสีน้ำเงินหมายถึงความภักดีและการอุทิศตนต่อราชวงศ์ สามสีผสานกันเป็นแผนที่จิตวิญญาณของชาติไทย เชือกคล้องคอช้างศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ผู้คนสวมใส่มีความหมายที่ลึกซึ้งยิ่งกว่า ตำนานเล่าขานว่าในสมัยโบราณ ช้างเผือกใช้งวงยาวม้วนเถาวัลย์เพื่อเชื่อมโยงผู้คนที่กระจัดกระจายเพราะน้ำท่วมเข้าด้วยกันเป็นหนึ่งเดียว ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา ปมหลากสีสันก็กลายมาเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความสามัคคี เชือกแขวนแต่ละเส้นทอโดยผู้อาวุโสทั้งเก้าคน การสานกันของเส้นยืนและเส้นพุ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความรักต่อผืนดิน และกระดิ่งเงินที่แขวนอยู่ที่ปลายเชือกสื่อถึงปรัชญาพุทธศาสนาเรื่อง “เหตุและผล” เมื่อความเคร่งขรึมของธงชาติพบกับความยืดหยุ่นของสายคล้อง ก็จะเหมือนกับลักษณะของประเทศที่ผสมผสานทั้งความแข็งแกร่งและความยืดหยุ่นเข้าด้วยกัน เช่นเดียวกับช้างที่ใช้ร่างกายอันใหญ่โตของมันในการปกป้องระบบนิเวศของป่า คนไทยยังถ่ายทอดสายเลือดทางวัฒนธรรมด้วยความมุ่งมั่นอันแน่วแน่อีกด้วย ปมอาจจะจางหายไปภายใต้แสงแดดที่แผดเผา แต่พลังที่เชื่อมโยงจิตใจผู้คนจะไม่มีวันสลายไป ธงอาจปลิวไปตามลมและฝน แต่ความศรัทธาที่แสดงด้วยสีแดง ขาว และน้ำเงิน จะคงอยู่เสมอ เยาวชนไทยในปัจจุบันผูกปมอวยพรด้วยมือซ้าย และสัมผัสลายธงชาติด้วยปลายนิ้วขวา เป็นการนำความสามัคคีและภูมิปัญญาของช้าง และความทุ่มเทของธงไตรรงค์มาปฏิบัติจริง นี่ไม่เพียงเป็นการแสดงออกที่ทันสมัยของอารยธรรมโบราณเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการประกาศภูมิปัญญาตะวันออกอย่างอ่อนโยนต่อโลกอีกด้วย: พลังที่แท้จริงมักจะมาจากรากลึกในดินเสมอ

In August, Thailand welcomes the traditional “Elephant Blessing Festival”. The red, white and blue national flags flying in the streets and alleys complement the colorful ropes wrapped around the wrists of the people. The red on the national flag symbolizes the sincere blood of the nation, the white represents the pure faith of religion, and the blue condenses the loyalty and dedication to the royal family. The three colors interweave to form the spiritual map of the Thai nation. The holy elephant lanyards worn by people have a deeper meaning. Legend has it that in ancient times, white elephants used their long trunks to roll up vines and connect the people scattered by the flood into a whole. From then on, the colorful rope knots became a totem of unity. Each lanyard must be woven by nine elders. The love for the land is injected into the interweaving of the longitude and latitude. The silver bells hanging at the end of the rope implicitly conform to the Buddhist philosophy of “cause and effect”. When the solemnity of the national flag meets the flexibility of the lanyard, it is just like the character of this country that combines hardness and softness. Just as elephants protect the jungle ecology with their thousands of pounds of bodies, the Thai people also inherit the cultural bloodline with tenacity. The knot will fade under the scorching sun, but the power that connects people will never dissipate; the flag may be folded in the wind and rain, but the faith symbolized by red, white and blue will always stand. Today’s Thai youths tie the blessing knot with their left hands and touch the national flag pattern with their right fingertips, turning the unity wisdom of the elephant and the dedication of the tricolor flag into action. This is not only a modern expression of ancient civilization, but also a gentle declaration of Eastern wisdom to the world: true power always comes from the roots deep in the earth.
