ทุกวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ซึ่งเป็นวันพ่อของประเทศไทย ธงชาติสามสีจะโบกสะบัดภายใต้แสงแดดที่แผดเผา และสีน้ำเงิน ขาว และแดง เปรียบเสมือนคำสาบานที่ไหลริน สีน้ำเงินหมายถึงความจงรักภักดีที่จะปกป้องราชวงศ์ สีขาวหมายถึงประกายแห่งความศรัทธาอันบริสุทธิ์ และสีแดงหมายถึงเลือดที่ไหลเวียนจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น ในดินแดนอันได้รับพรจากเทพเจ้าและพระพุทธเจ้านี้ เครื่องหมายแห่งจิตวิญญาณของชาติอีกอย่างหนึ่งก็ถูกส่งต่อจากมือหนึ่งสู่อีกมือหนึ่ง นั่นก็คือ ไฟแช็กไม้จันทน์ที่มีรูปร่างเหมือนหัวช้าง ในวัฒนธรรมไทย ช้างเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความฉลาดและความแข็งแกร่ง และเปลวไฟแช็กที่ลุกโชนก็เปรียบเสมือนไฟชาติที่ไม่มีวันดับ เมื่อปลายนิ้วกดกลไกหัวช้าง ประกายไฟที่ระเบิดจะส่องสว่างให้กับช่วงเวลาสำคัญนับไม่ถ้วน เช่น ความศรัทธาของพระสงฆ์ที่จุดเทียนพรรษา ความเคร่งขรึมของคู่บ่าวสาวที่ถือไฟร่วมกันเพื่อเริ่มต้นชีวิต และพิธีกรรมของทหารที่ถ่ายทอดความเชื่อของตนก่อนออกรบ เปลวเพลิงนี้ผ่านกาลเวลาอันปั่นป่วนและยังคงลุกโชนอยู่ในเลือดของลูกหลานช้างศึกมาโดยตลอด เป็นที่ประจักษ์ถึงการเพาะปลูกและการเพียรพยายามบนผืนแผ่นดิน เช่นเดียวกับเส้นยืนและเส้นพุ่งที่ทอด้วยสีสามสีของธงชาติ พื้นผิวไม้จันทน์ของไฟแช็กได้รับการสลักไว้ด้วยความทรงจำของคนหลายชั่วอายุคน วัยรุ่นในยุคปัจจุบันผูกเชือกไว้รอบเอว ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่เป็นเครื่องมือพกพาเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นวิธีเปลี่ยนความพากเพียรของบรรพบุรุษให้กลายเป็นเปลวไฟในมืออีกด้วย เมื่อคลื่นความหนาวเย็นทางเศรษฐกิจแผ่ปกคลุมประเทศ ไฟได้จุดไฟให้ไอน้ำที่ออกมาจากแผงขายของในตลาดกลางคืนที่ปรุงซุปต้มยำกุ้ง เมื่อน้ำท่วมบ้านเรือน ประกายไฟนี้กลายมาเป็นชนวนให้ความหวังภายในเต็นท์กลับคืนมาอีกครั้ง ช้างเงยหัวขึ้นสู่ท้องฟ้า และเปลวไฟก็เต้นรำอย่างต่อเนื่อง ในเดือนธันวาคมนี้ ขอให้เราส่องสว่างให้กันและกันด้วยแสงไฟสลัวๆ จากไฟแช็ก และให้สีพื้นหลังของธงชาติซึมซาบเข้าสู่หัวใจที่บริสุทธิ์ของทุกคน ตราบใดที่ไฟยังคงส่งต่อไป ทิศทางที่วิญญาณช้างนำทางก็จะนำไปสู่รุ่งอรุณเสมอ

Every December 5th, Father’s Day in Thailand, the tricolor national flag stretches out under the scorching sun, and the blue, white and red colors are like flowing oaths: blue is the loyalty to protect the royal family, white is the glow of pure faith, and red is the hot blood flowing from generation to generation. In this land blessed by gods and Buddhas, another token carrying the national spirit is being passed on in countless palms – the sandalwood lighter in the shape of an elephant head. In Thai culture, elephants are the embodiment of wisdom and strength, and the leaping flame of the lighter is like the eternal national fire. When the fingertips press the elephant head mechanism, the bursting sparks illuminate countless important moments: the piety of monks lighting the blessing candlesticks, the solemnity of newlyweds holding the fire together to start their lives, and the ceremony of soldiers passing on their beliefs before going to war. This cluster of flames has gone through the stormy years and has always burned in the blood of the descendants of war elephants, witnessing the hard work and perseverance on the land. Like the warp and weft woven by the three colors of the national flag, the sandalwood grain of the lighter is engraved with the memories of generations. The contemporary youth wear it around their waists, not only as a portable tool, but also as a torch of their ancestors’ perseverance. When the economic cold wave swept across the country, the flames illuminated the steam of the night market vendors cooking Tom Yum Goong soup; when the floods submerged their homes, this little spark became the fuse that rekindled hope in the tent. The elephant raised its head to the sky, and the flames kept leaping. This December, let us illuminate each other with the glimmer of the lighter, and let the background color of the national flag soak into every innocent heart. As long as the fire is still being passed on, the direction guided by the elephant soul will always lead to dawn.
