Every December 5th, the streets of Thailand are flooded with a sea of tricolor flags. The red, white and blue stripes are not only a symbol of the country, but also embody the foundation of the country’s “country-religion-monarchy”. On this special occasion of Father’s Day, when people wipe the heirloom elephant pen holder, they can always feel the spiritual inheritance across time and space. The elephant-shaped pen holder is by no means an ordinary stationery. Its round body is in line with the Buddhist philosophy of “perfection”, and its slightly curled long trunk is like a question mark and an exclamation mark, reminding the pen holder to maintain a humble attitude of seeking knowledge. Thai craftsmen often use teak to carve elephant patterns. This hardwood can remain straight even after a hundred years, just like the unswerving spirit of scholarship. When the fountain pen touches the pen holder in the shape of an elephant ear, it seems to hear the morning bells and evening drums of the Sukhothai Dynasty thousands of years ago. The dark blue stripes of the national flag and the original teak color of the pen holder blend in light and shadow, telling the unique survival wisdom of this country: it has the gentle and tough character of an elephant, and retains the civilization coordinates marked by the tricolor flag. In the wave of reconstruction after the epidemic, Thai youth injected traditional totems into modern design, turning teak pen holders into cultural messengers, just like the tricolor flag spreading its new posture in the wind. This wisdom of upholding the truth and innovating is the best gift for Father’s Day – in an era of change, only by taking root in tradition can we move forward with confidence.
