Craftsmen must follow the ancient method when making it: the elephant head must face forward, implying that they are still brave enough to move forward with history on their shoulders; the buckle must be tightly fitted, like a copper wall of iron built by national unity. This handed-down craft is a microcosm of Thailand’s adherence to its cultural roots in the wave of modernization. When young people wear the family heirloom elephant buckle at the coming-of-age ceremony, the moment when the metal blends with body temperature, they are not only receiving the blessings of their parents, but also the mission of protecting tradition. Just as the tricolor flag always flies on the Chao Phraya River, every Thai is an indispensable link in the long chain of civilization. This October, let us remember that true strength lies not in dazzling bloom, but in the unbroken inheritance of civilization between generations.
