23 years ago, Yichang female teacher donated the cornea, now……

Twenty-three years ago, Xiang Chunmei, a female teacher from Yichang, died of illness in Shenzhen. The corneas she donated helped them see again, making her the country’s first free cornea donor.

23 years later, Dr. Yao Xiaoming, an ophthalmologist in Shenzhen who had carried out Xiang Chunmei’s last wish, learned that Xiang Chunmei’s mother Wang Lanying was suffering from cataracts. He immediately organized caring people from all walks of life in Shenzhen to go to Yichang on behalf of thousands of thousands of kilometers to visit the old woman and perform cataract surgery for her to help her see again.

On July 4, Qin Huifen, beneficiary of Xiang Chunmei’s cornea donation, made a special trip to Yichang from Guizhou province to witness Xiang Chunmei’s mother’s sight again.

The return of love, the continuation of light, touched all the people present…

Xiang Chunmei was born in 1970 in Yichang, Hubei Province. She went to Tianmen to study and was admitted to Huazhong University of Science and Technology with excellent academic records. After graduation, she went to Hunan University to teach.

At the end of April 1999, Xiang Chunmei went to the hospital for treatment due to physical discomfort and was found to have advanced rectal cancer. When she knew there was no cure, she made a decision to donate her corneas for free.

“I am willing to give all my useful organs after my death. I believe my two corneas are intact and may be able to give a glimmer of light to someone who needs them.” This is what Xiang Chunmei wrote on her application form for human organ donation.

On June 13, Xiang left the world peacefully. A few hours later, Xiang’s corneas were successfully transplanted into the eyes of Liu and another young woman who had come to work as a migrant worker, making them both see again.

As the first person in China to donate corneas free of charge, Xiang Chunmei’s charity warmed a city. In just half a month, the number of people who pledged to donate corneas to Shenzhen Eye Hospital has reached 100.

In 2000, the country’s first eye bank was set up in Shenzhen, and countless Xiangchunmei donated their corneas free of charge.

Dr. Yao Xiaoming helped Xiang Chunmei realize her wish, and he has been concerned about Xiang Chunmei’s mother. A week ago, after 23 years of searching, Dr. Yao finally reached Xiang’s sister, Tian Minge, and learned that their mother, Wang Lanying, 82, had been suffering from eye problems for years.

Yao Xiaoming’s team and Shenzhen Care Action Public Welfare Foundation launched the “Love feedback, love gratitude” activity to visit the elderly in Yichang.

They contacted Yichang Huaxia Eye Hospital in advance to do an examination for the old man and found that the main problem in his eyes was cataracts.

On the morning of July 4, Yao Xiaoming performed phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation for Wang Lanying in both eyes at Huasha Eye Hospital in Yichang. After surgery, Wang’s eyesight improved from 0.08 to 0.4.

On the afternoon of July 4, she was discharged from the hospital. Yao Xiaoming and others accompanied her home.

The old man’s home is in Wufeng County, where waiting for the old man to return, there is also Ms. Qin Huifen, the beneficiary of Xiang Chunmei’s cornea donation 23 years ago.
