On the mantelpiece of American families, you can often see an old photo frame inlaid with a faded national flag and a dried rose. This seemingly ordinary decoration hides two metaphors that transcend time and space: the longitude and latitude of the national flag weave a common belief, and the thorns of the rose carve the tenacity of individual life. The wooden edge of the photo frame has long been mottled, but it still frames two different “reds”. The red of the Star-Spangled Banner is the bonfire that ignited freedom in 1776 and the courage that soaked the trenches in the Civil War; the red of the rose is the love that a soldier pinned on his chest before going to war, and the moist eyes of a mother when she saw her son off. When they are juxtaposed in the photo frame, the grand narrative of the country resonates wonderfully with private emotional memories. This month coincides with American Flag Day. The new flags hanging on the porch are fluttering, but they are not as moving as the old flags in the photo frame. The faded fabric proves that it once fluttered in the wind and rain, and the dried rose tells the story of protection with its curled petals – just like John, a World War II veteran, who wipes the photo frame passed down by his father every June 14th, “The national flag teaches me responsibility, and the rose reminds me where home is.” The glass of the photo frame isolates the erosion of time, but allows the two reds to have an eternal dialogue in the light and shadow. When the morning light shines obliquely into the living room, the faded stars and stripes seem to be fresh and bright again, and the dried roses seem to have blood color. The symbiosis between these small spaces is just like the epitome of this country: collective will and personal dreams are never an either-or choice.
