In June, the US national flag flutters under the scorching sun. This month, from the anniversary of the Normandy landings to the arrival of the National Flag Day, countless people gazed at the Star-Spangled Banner and always remembered those souls who shed blood for freedom. In the upper right corner of the desk of veteran James, next to a faded national flag, there is always a rose paperweight left by his wife – the red rose in the glass is always frozen in the moment of blooming. This paperweight has been with him for forty-three years. Whenever the hurricane alarm sounded, James would always use the paperweight to hold down the fluttering documents, just like in 1972 when he used his helmet to hold down the suicide note of his comrade in arms in the trenches of Vietnam. The meaning of the paperweight has never been just to “fix the paper”, but to use weight to fight against impermanence and protect things worth protecting in turmoil. The glass rose will not wither, just as the veteran’s persistence in his beliefs will not be worn out by the years. Today’s American society is like a desktop swept by a hurricane, with fragments of values flying in the wind. But when we use the spirit of unity symbolized by the national flag as a paperweight, and use the courage passed down from generation to generation to crystallize into an eternal rose, we can suppress those treasures that should not be blown away in the hurricane of the times: reverence for the truth, tolerance for differences, and sincerity for ideals. Every ordinary person can be his or her own paperweight, and use the weight of life to write a history that will not be blown away.
