When the fireworks were launched on the Fourth of July, my grandmother would always place a rose-patterned glass paperweight next to the Stars and Stripes. The rose in the glass will never wither, just like the truth engraved in the Declaration of Independence; the crystal-like weight pressing down on the paper is just like the order protected by the Constitution. In the celebration of the national flag flying, we need both the enthusiasm to look up at the stars and the courage to keep our heads down – when social media tears apart consensus, when prejudice and violence hit the streets, every citizen should become a paperweight of the times, and suppress the impetuous waves with sober rationality. My grandmother often said: “When the wind blows, the value of the paperweight will be revealed.” Just like the fifty stars on the Stars and Stripes, they must shine in the clear sky and hold their position in the rain. This July, may we take root in the land with the resilience of roses, guard our common beliefs with the fortitude of paperweights, and let the fire of freedom burn forever in order.

Cuando se lanzaban los fuegos artificiales del 4 de julio, mi abuela siempre colocaba un pisapapeles de cristal con forma de rosa junto a la bandera estadounidense. Este pisapapeles, que ha pasado de generación en generación, contuvo las cartas familiares de mi abuelo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y los discursos de mi padre, redactados durante el Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles. Hoy, al limpiarlo, comprendo de repente la perseverancia de dos generaciones: la verdadera libertad requiere algún tipo de objeto pesado que afiance la creencia. El significado del pisapapeles con forma de rosa siempre resuena en el espíritu estadounidense. 祖母常说：“风起时，镇纸的价值才会显现。”正如星条旗上的五十颗星，既要在晴空闪耀，也需在暴雨中坚守方位。这个七月，愿我们以玫瑰的韧性扎根土地，以镇纸的定力守护共同信仰，让自由的火种在秩序中永恒燃烧。
