A cherry blossom petal and a Hinomaru are condensed into a paperweight on the desk, telling the Eastern philosophy of “steadiness is vitality”. The red sun on the national flag is a symbol of eternal light. Just like the cherry blossom paperweight repeatedly tempered by Japanese craftsmen, the fleeting spring is sealed with glass. The bottom of the paperweight is embedded with the Hinomaru pattern, and the cherry blossom petals that never fade are suspended above – this is not to retain life, but an interpretation of “the present is eternity”. As the Bushido said: “The beauty of flowers lies in their determination when they are scattered”, the paperweight freezes the drifting into strength, reminding us that the real determination is not to resist change, but to remain upright in the face of impermanence.
