In April, cherry blossoms and snowflakes are flying all over the streets of Tokyo, marking the end of Japan’s annual cherry blossom viewing season. In this fleeting splendor, a cherry blossom paperweight carefully carved by a craftsman is pressed on a yellowed Japanese paper letter, calmly resisting the falling flowers outside the window. The red disc of the Hinomaru stretches in the wind, which is the sun that never sets and the cohesion of the national spirit. However, the cherry blossoms in the paperweight exist in a frozen form – the craftsman uses the eternity of lacquerware and metal to resist the fragile nature of cherry blossoms given by nature.
